1. Words from Lisa Pijuan-NomuraWelcome to the RED Letter! Glad to see that there more people are subscribing! We are now at 1527 subscribers! It seems like such a long time since I last wrote a newsletter and I have many things to report in the world of me and RED and fall happenings in this great city of ours! But first, a short little essay. What I Did on my Summer Vacation by Lisa Pijuan-Nomura This summer vacation I was lucky to go and study with LaMama E.T.C. International Director's Symposium in Umbria, Italy. For three weeks, 30 participants were exposed to new ways of working with 6 International Theatre Directors. These three weeks were filled with hard word, collaboration and brilliant Italian food. (Can I tell you that I never want to see a truffle for as long as I live? Truffles are a delicacy of Umbrian cuisine. They are really expensive and it takes a lot of work to cultivate them. No offense to my Umbrian amice, but to me, truffles taste like dirty mushrooms, no, dirt with a little bit of mushrooms)
For those of you who don't know, LaMama E.T.C ( www.lamama.org ) was created 45 years ago by Ellen Stewart. I met Ellen in Toronto at the Performance Creation Canada Conference that I was helping to organize. At 87, Ellen was bright eyed with that hint of mischievousness that I appreciate in people! When we met in Umbria, Ellen had been on the road for 3 months in Greece and Albania directing her shows. Although tired she came out to community dinners and performances. For me, I felt lucky to sit and listen to her many stories of her years in international theatre. Really inspiring. I hope that I am still working when I am 87! By the time I returned home, I was exhausted and spent 10 days up north with my lovely husband reading, sleeping, and becoming friends with our pet turtles, Frank and Freak. (Please do not feed the turtles, these guys really were like begging dogs, waiting by rocks for us to feed them! which of course we didn't do!) Glad to be home, I feel ready and refreshed to get to work on the many exciting projects happening this year! This fall brings some exciting news. In October we will celebrate the 4 th Anniversary of RED with two nights of performance. On October 10th, there will be a RED Special Event entitled The Paradise Project: An Ekphrastic Collision . The Project will include 12 artists retelling the story of Paradise Lost by John Milton. Artists involved are Gurpreet Chana (tabla), Ann MacDougall (Storyteller), Noah Kenneally (Puppetry), Ilse Gudino (Flamenco and Percussion), Deanna Lynn Jones (theatre), Melanie Gordon (photography), Jascha Narveson (Composer), Yves Candau (Modern Dancer), Elana Freeman (Theatre), Chris Gibbs (Comedy), and Lucy Rupert (modern dance). The project will be directed/facilitated by Erin Shields and myself. The next night will be RED: A Night of Live Performance that includes a handful of returning and new artists from REDs. Featured artists include Learie McNicholls, Kate Franklin, Karen Richardson, Meagan O'Shea, Jonathan Bennett and many more! I am also proud to announce the 2nd RED Festival in April of 2007. Thanks to the Ontario Arts Council we have received funding to make this a possibility. Keep your eye out for more information. So, as you can see it's been a busy summer and now it's a busy fall! September has some really juicy events happening! I look forward to connecting with many of you that I haven't seen in a few months. As always, if you have any ideas, or just want to say hello please drop me a line at lisa@girlcancreate.com Hope this finds you well and rested! Lisa PIjuan-Nomura P.S. Check out Lula Lounge Podcasts! Thes are great podcasts that feature some of the featured artists at Toronto's best Live Music Venue for World Music! www.lula.ca. They are also hosted by one of my favourite people Jose Ortega of Lula Lounge!

The First Annual 3. Featured Event: Queen West Arts Crawl
Buzz, character, edge, authenticity, and soul are all part of what makes the Queen West neighborhood unique. From September 15 - 17 , from Roncesvalles to Spadina, Artscape celebrates that spirit with the people of the Queen West community as they throw open their doors for the 4th annual Queen West Art Crawl - one of the largest multi-disciplinary, community-based festivals that Toronto has to offer. The Queen West Art Crawl - something for everyone and nothing quite like it! Four years ago Artscape instigated this feisty little event to demonstrate its pride in being part of the growth and creativity of one of Toronto's most celebrated and authentic cultural districts. Today, the Crawl has exploded into a multi-dimensional celebration that makes Queen Street West the envy of creative places everywhere. THE 2006 QUEEN WEST ART CRAWL WILL FEATURE: Community Events, Performances and Exhibitions - From in-store performances and art exhibitions to make-your-own-pop-up books and theatre games for youth, the neighborhood spills onto the streets and into Queen Street West businesses. Outdoor Art Show & Sale - A smorgasbord of art featuring artists, crafts people, buskers, performance artists, arts and community organizations, and an outdoor food court in Trinity Bellwoods Park, all weekend long. A professional jury will select one artist to receive the Best in Show Award, generously sponsored by The Drake Hotel . Young Artist Showcase - A citywide, juried exhibition of Toronto's most promising and gifted young visual artists and photographers, aged 16-21, at The Gladstone Hotel, all weekend-long. The artists are selected by a professional jury who represent some of Toronto's most prestigious and best-loved gallery and arts organizations. The Red Light Project - Taking street theatre to a new level, this multi-disciplinary exhibition of engaging and offbeat human stories is set in storefront windows throughout the Parkdale neighbourhood... all of which will be kept top secret until 8 pm sharp on Saturday, September 16 when the public is invited to gather at the Parkdale Public Library meeting spot. The Red Light Project is conceived and curated by Kelly Thornton and Clinton Walker. Performance artists featured include: Sherri Hay, Camellia Koo, JP Robichaud, Ulysses Castellanos, Natasha Priest, Sean McMahon, Lisa Pijuan-Nomura, and Kaminari - Yoshi & Chie Yamano. The Beauty Salon/ Salon de Beauté - A truly interactive performance art installation staged at The Gladstone Hotel for the duration of the Crawl. It is a functional and free "Beauty Salon" featuring attendants who offer transformative services. Oh la la! The audience becomes "living breathing art" as willing participants interact with the installation and partake in procedures that challenge concepts of beauty and gender. The Beauty Salon is conceived by Moynan King, Associate Artist at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre and Hysteria Festival Director, and designed by the illustrious and artful duo of Trixie and Beever . The Puppet Project - Dozens of performers hit Trinity Bellwoods Park and the surrounding streets with five-minute impromptu puppet performances between 2 - 4 pm all weekend long. Curated and directed by writer, artist, and puppeteer Noah Kenneally , groups of both professionals and beginners will be lead in the art of story telling and puppet performance. The Bubble Wrap Show - Think inside the bubble! Often used for transporting and protecting fine art, bubble wrap finally has its day. It's Not A Deli Art Galley presents an exhibition of mixed media, collage and conceptual art utilizing Bubble Wrap as the medium of choice. The Bubble Wrap Show features the work of Paul Aloisi, Henry Benvenuti, Eduardo DellaForesta, Charlie Green, Karel Vondra, and Aubrey Swyer. Pride Photo Exhibition - Another one of Toronto's great festivals is commemorated in the work of Pride's official photographer Adrian Tierney. Blue Igloo, a Parkdale housewares store presented in a gallery setting, proudly presents an exciting collection of photos depicting the different moods and emotions felt during Pride Week in Toronto, with 10% of all sales from the exhibition being donated to Casey House. Design Your Own Cupcake at Dufflet - Long-time Queen West community business Dufflet Pastries serves up some edible art with a design-your-own-cupcake event. The public can create their own appetizing art from the blank canvas of their delicious cupcakes. Do It At The Gladstone - The cultural mavericks at The Gladstone Hotel are up to their usual brilliance with a showcase of diverse artists who reflect the incredible spectrum of tenant that makes Queen Street West so vibrant. 4. Read this Book! With Book Lady Sarah Selecky
In an article that the Globe and Mail ran in early August, Kate Taylor posed the query: why do women account for about 70% of the Canadian book market? Where are the men who read? She quotes Russell Smith, who is frustrated with the current fiction trend - shelves and shelves of books that appeal mainly to women: books with a story about family, memory and loss. These are books with pages upon pages about feelings, he said. And great fiction is not just about feelings - it can also be about ideas.
5. RED Updates
A RED Special Event: The Paradise Project is a multi-disciplinary artistic reinterpretation of John Milton's Paradise Lost. Through a collision of modern dance, theatre, music, puppetry, storytelling, flamenco, spoken work, bouffon, comedy and visual art, sixteen of the most talented, diverse artists in Toronto weave in and out of one another to retell Milton's interpretation of the classic Genesis story of Adam, Eve, God, Christ and, of course, Satan. This feast for the eyes and ears is the first instillation in the growth of an epic performance that will rival the epic itself. October 10th, 2006, 8pm Stay tuned for the complete lineup of RED 4 th Anniversary Show details! 6. Classes, Workshops and Conferences
The Improvising Citizen
This workshop is an intensive laboratory for dancers, performers, physical actors, interdisciplinary actionists, and imaginative citizens. The Improvising Citizen questions, plays and investigates the relationship between studio and city, between art practice and citizenship, between private and public, sensation and _expression... attempting to create a dynamic double helix of interdisciplinary friction and collaboration. Employing non-hierarchical teaching structures based in feminist, anarchist, and indigenous theories and practice Hennessy revisits the classic feminist claim that the personal is political and the political is personal. The workshop asks the question: Is Toronto Improvising?

Bouffon Workshops with Adam Lazurus This workshop is for professional and emerging artists interested in Bouffon, and artists who want to overcome performance inhibitions. Bouffon techniques are extremely useful for performers in all disciplines, as well as for writers, public speakers, teachers and critical thinkers. Games and exercises are used to discover your own jeu in mocking social hypocrisies while simultaneously making audiences love you. Through Jeu, students will re-discover their mental and physical agility, sensitivity, stillness and complicity in a group. The Bouffon will allow the actor to be a big person in a small body and to refine their awareness of the world around them. Students are encouraged to embrace this awareness and the power of being seen and listened to. Bouffon is the contra-mask to clown. They are the satirists of society. They are the carnival freaks, King Lear's fool, Ali G. Working in the tradition of Master Teacher Philippe Gaulier, the Bouffon workshop builds from the study of Jeu and progresses into building Bouffon characters and numbers to be performed. Rusticle Gym FREEDOM. DISCOVERY. INSPIRATION.... and a little sweating too... Theatre Rusticle is thrilled to offer an exciting series of workshops for artists and the public called The Rusticle Gym! WHAT IS IT? The Rusticle Gym is exactly that – a gym, a place to workout, to stretch tired, under-used muscles or find muscles you never knew you had. It is for people looking to sweat physically, emotionally and creatively. It is for people of all shapes, sizes and ages. It is where one comes to explore their creative landscape. Instead of elliptical machines and free weights, participant's workout in physical image based workshops or on monologue/scene study. It is about exploration of the creative known and unknown discovered through the elements that Theatre Rusticle uses when we create our shows. WHO IS IF FOR? The Gym is for EVERYONE – actors, dancers, musicians, seniors, young people (over 16) and non-artists. Because the approach to the sessions is holistic, participants from all walks of life and technical level can engage in the gym, work out, and get down and dirty in creative discovery. WHAT ARE THE SESSIONS? Between October 10th and 21st, we are offering 8 Gyms led by Theatre Rusticle artists Viv Moore, Hume Baugh, Patrick Conner and Allyson McMackon . Each session is 2 hours long and participants will get a taste of the elements that go into creating theatre from scratch including: Movement Gym : warming up the body, mind and heart, alignment and relaxation, impulse work. Monologue Gym: exploring a given text for character, rhythm, action, intention and objectives. Physical Imagery Gym: exploring personal imagery through the body and physical improvisation. Vocal Freedom Gym: exploring personal stories and story-telling through the voice and gesture. The Gym is driven by the need to encourage embodiment and ignite the imagination while providing an environment that guides and leads without judgment. We advocate the freedom of working in non-traditional forms, in working out the voice and the body, in working in abstraction and naturalism. Through this, participants will see the malleability of the process and find ways in which they can either integrate the work into their own practice and lives. We recognize that "play" and theatrical discovery are essential components in the health of our art form and our lives in general. WHAT ARE THE DETAILS?
