1. Words from Lisa Pijuan-Nomura
I didn't really play a lot of board games as a kid. I thought they were trivial and lame. You would often find me in my room reading a book. Any book that I could get my hands on which might explain my desire to share good books with all of you who read the letter!
When I was little I wasn't interested in television or sports. It was books that I loved best. I went to the library every Saturday after my theatre arts classes and spent about two hours searching for exciting reads that would expand my imagination and horizons. I don't like to admit it, but I was a bit of a odd duck that could relate to the characters in my books more than I could to the kids in my class.
But recently board games have found a way to come back into my life. I married a man who likes a good battle of RISK, or a good Yatzee game once in a while. And it was he who introduced me to the magic of Jenga.
Jenga is a block game that has its players construct a tall tower of blocks. The object is to remove the blocks from the lower half of the tower to add to the top making it the tallest of towers with out toppling all over. This game is fun. It's addictive. And whenever I can, I have a game of Jenga. For my annual holiday party, I had about 20 people playing a round of Jenga. Everyone played and everyone breathed and everyone screamed when the tower fell. At that moment, I realized why I loved it.
Jenga is a good metaphor for art. If you take from the already existing foundation you can build a taller tower, but if you take to much without adding anything more it might just topple. It's great to share with other people. Jenga takes a lot of attention, so does art. And this building blocks game is really about balance. About taking a risk on something that might not work, but in the end gets you closer to what it is you want. In art, creating a unique piece, and in Jenga, getting one block higher!
There are a lot of things happening this February, A Fundraiser for RED, Valentines Day (Check out the cool FADO promotion!) and my birthday!
It's been crazy cold, so be well, stay inside, find some blocks and start building. You will be amazed at how fun it can be!

Set amidst the doomed men and rotten ideals of Stalinist Russia, The Russian Play tells the story of a flower-shop girl who falls in love with a gravedigger – a bleak and bittersweet ode to the dangerous joys of love. The double bill is completed by the debut of USSR, a darkly ironic exposé of the Russian immigrant experience. The Russian Plays offers a unique and engrossing night of exciting new theatre.
Here's what the critics had to say about The Russian Play
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED "...incredibly powerful with breathtaking emotion... A Must-See "
- Toronto Star
***1/2(3-1/2 out of 4 stars), "It's that rarest of all theatrical experiments: a clever satire with a beating heart."
- Kamal al-Solaylee, The Globe and Mail
NNNN (4out of 5 N's), "funny and moving...first rate cast... A WINNER!"
- Jon Kaplan, Now Magazine
#1 PICK: "Perfect Production...Perfect Fable "
- Robert Cushman, National Post
4. An Interview with Hannah Moskovitch: Playwright of The Russian Plays
Tell us a bit about yourself and how you came to be a playwright. Was it something that you have always wanted to do?
I trained as an actor, but quickly realized that I wanted more of a "voice" in the theatre that I was a part of. I was ambitious not to be seen onstage and to speak other people's words but to be heard in the content, or meaning, of the work. You can sometimes tell what you want to do by who you envy - I envied Judith Thompson, Morwyn Brebner, Claudia Dey. I never envied Martha Henry or Lucy Peacock, so I guess that's a sure sign.
The Russian Plays deal with a very specific time in history. Tell us about how you came to write these scripts? Do they come from your family's experience of immigration?
I would love to say that my process was structured and logical. The Russian Play began with an image of a girl with the shabby-glamour of a prostitute challenging the audience to answer her question to them: "where do you hide a piece of bread?" The Russian Play evolved out of that image and that question ( a long evolution, mind you). My family did emigrate from the Soviet Union to escape the pogroms and the gas chambers so that's probably in me and surfacing in this way.
Often people say that to be a writer you must write about what you know. Tell me what you think about that?
I'm sure that's good advice. It sounds to me like the sort of thing you say to a recklessly ambitious and lazy beginner who chooses to write about the Aids epidemic in Africa when they're from Forest Hill. I'd say that with enough humility and research you can write about whatever strikes you as important to write about.
Any advice for beginner playwrights?
The trick is to use the fear that you feel to make yourself work harder and not let it sink you into paralysis. (advice more for neurotic beginner playwrights, I guess)
Hannah Moscovitch
Recent writing credits include Essay (workshopped through the Banff playRites Colony, Nightwood Theatre and Absit Omen Theatre; winner of the Contra Guys Playwriting Award at the SummerWorks Theatre Festival 2005), The Russian Play ( played to sold out house and rave reviews at the SummerWorks Theatre Festival 2006; winner of the 2006 SummerWorks Jury Prize), NGO (produced by The Wrecking Ball/ArcFest) Mexico City (produced as part of the inaugural Lab Cab Festival), and Born Guilty (developed through Tarragon Theatre's Playwrights Unit). Hannah is a student at the University of Toronto, and she is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada. Upcoming: Hannah is working with Theatrefront on the creation of The Mill , she is creating a new work with Volcano Theatre, and she is developing a play for young audience with Youtheatre Montreal. Her SummerWorks hit, The Russian Play, is being remounted as part of the Hatch season at Harbourfront in February, and at the Magnetic North Festival in Ottawa in June.

9. Read this Book! With Book Lady Sarah Selecky
A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian
by Marina Lewycka
This book was given to me by a friend who is from the UK - I'd never heard of it before. As soon as I read the first paragraph, I fell in love with the voice and storytelling. While reading it in a Harbourfront restaurant, a server interrupted me to say, "Oh, I LOVE that book! I just finished it last week!" I told her that I was enjoying it very much, and she said, "Just wait - it gets better and better."
Here is the first paragraph:
"Two years after my mother died, my father fell in love with a glamorous blonde Ukrainian divorcée. He was eighty-four and she was thirty-six. She exploded into our lives like a fluffy pink grenade, churning up the murky water, bringing to the surface a sludge of sloughed-off memories, giving the family ghosts a kick up the backside."
See what I mean?
Lewycka's sentences are charming, hilarious and down to earth, and her talent lies in her ability to play with language. The narrative is told in English, but many of the characters' first language is Ukrainian, making for some colourful translations. Lewycka never condescends to her characters or her readers - but she has a sharp sense of timing. There are some very funny bits. I laughed out loud consistently, from page 1 to page 324.
Of course Valentina, the Ukrainian divorcée, is after Papa's money. The thing is, he doesn't have any. When he begins to ask his daughters for financial help, they start to investigate - just who is this woman who is sleeping in their mother's home? The story about Papa and Valentina gets more and more unbelievable as time goes on. Papa is infuriating and pitiful and clever all at once, and you feel the sisters' frustration as you hear about each new turn of events.
There's more going on here, though. Nadia, our narrator and the youngest sister, begins to unearth some family stories and secrets along her journey. Vera, the older sister, unbearably patronizing, has secrets of her own. The two sisters have been feuding ever since their mother's death, but it seems that the fiasco that is Papa's new relationship might bring them together at last.
Papa is writing a book on the history of tractors, and it explores European history from an angle I've never thought of before. It's written in Ukrainian, but Nadia translates it for us, and Papa's chapters pepper the book. This adds a different texture to the book, and it underlines Papa's character in a way that would be difficult to do otherwise. He's an intelligent and astute writer and engineer, which contrast his other incarnations: an infuriating eccentric, horny sexist geezer, and a sad, lonely old man.
This novel is an exploration of family feuds, Ukrainian history, and old age. It's so much fun to spend time with these crazy characters. Valentina is simply amazing. You've got to read this book.

New World Stage:
...it's only a rehearsal
zero visibility corp . (Norway)
...it's only a rehearsal is choreographer Ina Christel Johannessen's powerful and physical duet for a man and a woman. Based on Ovid's myth of Actaeon and Artemis, the couple's relationship is revealed to us through their raw physical expression. The dynamic shifts between them as they rub and press, push and pull, back and forth--as the physical tension mounts in overtly sexual and sensual ways.
An intimate story of reward and punishment, the audience becomes the voyeur in this incredibly sexy, potentially risky, sometimes funny love story about the inherent connection between the watcher and the watched, and the fine line between desire and obsession.
